Wheat

Did you know that wheat is the most harvested crop in the world? Wheat is a member of the grass family which is widely cultivated for its seed, a cereal grain which is a worldwide staple food. Wheat is a building block for many common foods. Learn more about wheat in this month's special edition of The Story of Food.

Wheat is a very important crop world-wide. World trade in wheat is greater than for all other crops combined!

All types of wheat can be divided in two major groups: spring and winter wheat. Spring wheat is planted in April and May and is harvested in the fall. Winter wheat is planted in August or September and survives the winter to be harvested the next summer. Wheat is a building block for many common foods including bread, pasta, cookies and pizza dough which all have wheat as the main ingredient.
