An interactive learning experience for grades 3–4 that encourages children to to master the elements that plants need to grow.

Program Overview:

Seed Survivor by Nutrien is a free, curriculum-based, agricultural program for elementary students with a focus on Grades 3 and 4. Last year we planted approx. 100,000 sunflower seeds with students across Canada and the United States.

After participating in the Seed Survivor Program, students leave with an understanding that plants need water, light, healthy soil and nutrients to survive. They also learn about where their food comes from and the importance of agriculture to their daily lives. All participants get to plant a sunflower seed to take home and grow!

Option #1: Mobile Classroom (Calgary and area–1hr radius)

Seed Survivor Mobile is a truck and 36-foot trailer unit that travels to pre-registered schools and offers an interactive learning experience. Students spend half the presentation outside the trailer in a presenter-guided plant nutrient lesson and the other half of the presentation inside the trailer playing games at each of the stations. The mobile classroom offers multimedia and virtual reality games, planting station, talking walls and much more. One classroom of approximately 30 students can participate at a time, and it takes one hour to complete the lesson. The trailer is handicap accessible and includes an entry and exit door.

Option #2: Classroom Kit (Alberta wide)

This new innovative option was created in response to COVID-19 and has been well received in classrooms across North America. The virtual Seed Survivor presentation experience includes a hands-on kit component and presentation video, flexible lesson plans and online student activities.

In the Kit:

  • Seed Survivor cup and lids for up to 30 students

  • Seeds

  • Teacher poster thank you gift

  • Printed media card to help with accessing the materials online (e-version attached)

Teachers will be responsible for providing soil for the planting activity. Soil recommendations are included in the Lesson Plan. Photo/video submissions of classroom participation are greatly appreciated.

Please note: Due to the high demand for Seed Survivor we will be unable to meet all requests.
