Build your own wormery to watch the worms work their wizardry!
Materials:
2–3 earthworms
1 L plastic bottle
Compost
Soil
Sand
Scissors
Plastic wrap
Elastic
Water
Leaves
Paper
Tape
Instructions:
Remove labels from the bottle, and have an adult cut off the top of the bottle.
Add your soil and sand to the bottle. It can be in any order! Make sure they stay in clear layers though.
Place leaves on top of the soil and sand. Add water so that the layers are damp.
Add your worms.
Cover the top of the bottle with plastic wrap, using the elastic to secure it to the bottle. Poke holes in the plastic wrap so your worms can breathe!
Wrap the bottle in dark coloured paper, using tape to secure it. This keeps the wormery dark for the worms.
Keep in a cool place and water as needed.
Occasionally check in on the worms by removing the paper. You will be able to see the layers being mixed together over time.
When you’ve finished your experiment, release the worms back into your garden.
